During my internship at Youth Villages, I worked at a residential treatment facility with youth who have serious emotional, mental, and behavioral problems. I was assigned to work with boys ages 14-17 who have suffered some form of sexual trauma, resulting in them being sent to Youth Villages for treatment. My duties included co-leading the youths’ group therapy, leading life skills activities, entering contact notes and life skills notes into the youths’ charts, recording the youths’ mood and behaviors for the day and if they met their goals, communicating with the youths’ counselor and other staff members, and monitoring the youths’ interactions with their peers.

Supervisor: Jane Clement, Ph.D.At the University of Memphis, I helped students coming to the counseling center with stress and anxiety management by showing them relaxation strategies, such as gripping a stress ball, using a zen garden, or being mindful of their breathing. My duties included observing sessions between clinicians and patients, providing feedback to improve sessions, showing patients ways to manage their stress and anxiety, and administering interviews.
