My favorite class I ever took was AP Language and Composition in high school. The class taught us many fine details of writing - How changing a sentence's structure can change its meaning, how less is often more, how examples are most powerful when they come in threes. It was thrilling to combine years of experience voraciously reading and writing with this new theory, learn what I had really been doing all along, and apply that to discover how every part, paragraph, and sentence of a piece of writing contributed to the whole.Then we applied all this to give our classmates advice on their essays, and immediately I'd found my passion. My skills and knowledge weren't just helping me explain why I thought something was cool/deep/original; they were helping others express themselves more clearly and captivatingly, and it was endlessly rewarding.I ended up in news writing kind of by accident. I signed up for a communications internship in my last semester of high school, and it soon became clear I could get a lot more real-world experience if my focus was on writing. Though very different from editing, I soon found that news writing brought a very similar joy - I was still using my skills and knowledge in writing to help people express themselves.
