About Steven Small
Steven L. Small, M.D., Ph.D., is Ashbel Smith Professor of Neuroscience at the University of Texas at Dallas, and Professor of Neurology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He also serves as special assistant to the President of UT Dallas advising on collaborations and processes across these two institutions.Dr. Small recently served as Dean of the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences at the University of Texas at Dallas, where he reorganized the college into departments, hired > 40 faculty members, initiated the development of a clinical psychology center and doctoral program, started a clinical trial unit, and grew both high impact research and extramural research funding. Faculty growth included supporting the creation and then expanding greatly the Center for Advanced Pain Studies (300%), growing the Center for Vital Longevity (50%), and recruiting top clinical psychology clinician-scientists (300%). Previously, Dr. Small served as Chair of the Department of Neurology at the University of California, Irvine, where he expanded significantly the volume and quality of neurological services for the sixth largest county in the U.S. He is also Professor Emeritus of Neurology and Psychology at The University of Chicago, where he co-founded and co-directed the first high field (3T) research imaging center in the city.Dr. Small has promoted a new paradigm for the study of language, and co-founded with his postdoctoral fellow the Society for the Neurobiology of Language, which on its 14th anniversary has > 700 members. Complementing the society are a new open science journal with MIT Press, and an encyclopedic volume with Elsevier, both entitled Neurobiology of Language, and both co-edited. Dr. Small's research on the anatomy and physiology of the human brain and its relation to function uses non-invasive brain measurement techniques to directly investigate human subjects, particularly in speech and language, with emphasis on dynamic network structure and naturalistic experiments in both adults and children, and in healthy individuals and those with neurological injury.

CurrentNeurobiology of Language provides a high-integrity venue for articles across a range of disciplines addressing the neurobiological basis of human speech and language. Offering open access publishing, rigorous double-blind peer review, and quick turnaround times for authors, the journal aims to facilitate the replicability of experimental findings through modern open science requirements such as sharing of raw data and detailed methods. Sponsored by the Society for the Neurobiology of Language, and published by MIT Press, the journal invites innovative work that significantly advances the understanding of language mechanisms as implemented in the human brain. Topics of interest include the biological foundations of perceptual, cognitive, motor, and linguistic processes used to produce and understand language in children and adults, and in healthy individuals and those with brain disorders. The editors welcome articles drawing on a range of methods including, but not limited to, behavioral paradigms, functional and structural neuroanatomy, genetics, extracranial and intracranial brain stimulation and recording, and studies in animal models. They also encourage submissions in the form of novel experimental studies, clinical and nonclinical trials, replication studies, computational and theoretical models, and review articles.

Dr. Small was responsible for founding and developing this major new initiative at UC Irvine, aiming to develop incubator laboratories, offices, and workshops; to nurture relationships among clinicians, scientists, and engineers, including in academia and the private sector; to create new academic programs in innovation for trainees at all academic levels; and to work with university legal and technology transfer teams to bring medical innovation to production as rapidly as possible. Given the nature of the life sciences industry in Southern California, the initial focus of the Institute during Dr. Small's tenure was on medical devices, software, and imaging.

Dr. Small's laboratory investigates (1) the neurobiology of language, focusing on the integrated and segregated brain networks that perform expectation-based processing of higher order language in adults and during development. In translational science, we investigate language recovery from stroke in terms of performance variability and brain network function; and (2) the clinical and basic neurobiology of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI; concussion) in young adults using multiple behavioral and biological assessment tools, including connectivity-based MRI (structural and functional), EEG, cognitive and neurological testing, and ecological momentary assessments.

As Professor of Neurology, Dr. Small directed the Laboratory for Human Neuroscience in the Departments of Neurology and Psychology. The Laboratory trained many postdoctoral scholars and Ph.D. students in the neurobiology of language and in stroke regeneration and repair. Brain imaging methods used include functional magnetic resonance imaging, event-related encephalography, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and network computer modeling. The Brain Research Imaging Center, co-founded in 1999, was home to the first 3T MRI scanner in Chicago, and serves the U Chicago community in functional and structural brain imaging to the present.
