About Steven Small
Steven L. Small, M.D., Ph.D., is Ashbel Smith Professor of Neuroscience at the University of Texas at Dallas, and Professor of Neurology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He also serves as special assistant to the President of UT Dallas advising on collaborations and processes across these two institutions.Dr. Small recently served as Dean of the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences at the University of Texas at Dallas, where he reorganized the college into departments, hired > 40 faculty members, initiated the development of a clinical psychology center and doctoral program, started a clinical trial unit, and grew both high impact research and extramural research funding. Faculty growth included supporting the creation and then expanding greatly the Center for Advanced Pain Studies (300%), growing the Center for Vital Longevity (50%), and recruiting top clinical psychology clinician-scientists (300%). Previously, Dr. Small served as Chair of the Department of Neurology at the University of California, Irvine, where he expanded significantly the volume and quality of neurological services for the sixth largest county in the U.S. He is also Professor Emeritus of Neurology and Psychology at The University of Chicago, where he co-founded and co-directed the first high field (3T) research imaging center in the city.Dr. Small has promoted a new paradigm for the study of language, and co-founded with his postdoctoral fellow the Society for the Neurobiology of Language, which on its 14th anniversary has > 700 members. Complementing the society are a new open science journal with MIT Press, and an encyclopedic volume with Elsevier, both entitled Neurobiology of Language, and both co-edited. Dr. Small's research on the anatomy and physiology of the human brain and its relation to function uses non-invasive brain measurement techniques to directly investigate human subjects, particularly in speech and language, with emphasis on dynamic network structure and naturalistic experiments in both adults and children, and in healthy individuals and those with neurological injury.
