My wife, Dr. Louise G. Wright, has retired and closed her practice at the end of October 2017. That has left me more time to consultant and participate in community environmental and climate change-related activities.

Yeah, I know, this is a huge career divergence and it has an explanation, of course. Our family relocated to Minneapolis to join my parents (read "free-child care") and several of my sibs and their families. My wife, an experienced Family Physician, had no difficulty being recruited. The Habitat affiliate in Minneapolis at that time was building a growing number of single-family homes at the time. When I left the LA affiliate, through the unused properties and grace and of the City and County of Los Angeles, we were building multi-home condo-style projects with the prospect of taking on larger multi-home projects in the shared goal of acceleration the production of decent, affordable homes for families there. That experience and expertise, I hoped, could be brought to the Twin Cities affiliate. However, Twin Cities Habitat and all of the other low-income housing developers in the cities at that time didn't have any job openings. So, after too much time had passed, when one of the LA Habitat Board members who had moved to Minneapolis recommended me to Broadview (then known as Northwest Teleproductions) for a job opening there, I took it. The result, I learned how to develop, write, and produce so-called "how-to" cable TV programs. A skill that doesn't have any obvious transferability, unless, one needs to deliver a message to move and motivate.

Remodeling and new construction of thoughtfully designed and constructed homes in partnership with their owners, architects, designers, engineers (remember, LA is earthquake territory), municipal planners, building inspectors and neighborhoods. As was our own inclination and that of the small and tight group of professionals working together with us, all of our work incorporated sustainable design, materials, and construction. The using the word "sustainable" in the context of home building at that time was largely unknown and not used. Like "green" building, sustainability was among the misunderstood and usually laughed at terms in residential and commercial construction. It was a core principle of the education I received at the environmentally focused campus of the UW at Green Bay, WI.
