In light of what is known today about the nature of matter, to understand the origin of the visible mass in our Universe it is necessary to unravel the physics of hadrons, states of quarks and gluons bound together by the strong interaction. The rich dynamics of these systems is generally believed to be described from first principles by the theory of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). However, in the regime of low energies, which encompasses most of the world we live in, QCD is nonperturbative, making the rigorous calculation of hadronic bound states directly from its Lagrangian a very complicated problem. Consequently, alternative approaches are needed. My thesis explores one of these formalisms denoted by Covariant Spectator Theory (CST), and it constitutes an effort towards constructing a manifestly covariant model for all mesons, interpreted as quark-antiquark bound states, and derived directly in Minkowski space-time.

Supervised by Dr. Sofia Andringa and Dr. José Maneira, I took part in the project "Portuguese participation in SNO e SNO+ experiments" (CERN/FP/83548/2008).I have been involved in the calculation of the incoming fluxes of reactor antineutrinos, the study of their oscillation pattern and how to evaluate the sensitivity of the detector to the determination of the mixing mass parameter of neutrinos. I have used the Data Analysis framework of ROOT and Geant4.
