Examensarbetets syfte var att hitta en enkel och samordnad metod att uppskatta skärens totalyta inför beläggningsprocessen, som behövde optimeras för att uppnå maximal produktivitet. I arbetet ingick ritningsgranskning från modeller skapade både i CATIA och Unigraphics. Som ett led i arbetet intervjuades ett flertal personer på företaget och en god inblick gavs i produktions flöde och tillverkningsprocesser. Olika metoder och verktyg jämfördes och utvärderades i praktiken. Dessutom gjordes ett flertal egna beräkningsmodeller som gav Sandvik goda och intressanta resultat för vidare användning.
