Assisted the Ferree lab in the field with capturing, identifying, and banding a variety of small Southern California bird species, primarily white-crowned sparrows and California towhees. We trapped and handled live birds and took body condition measurements, blood, and fecal samples; in addition to directly handling birds, I also assisted with recording data in a timely and accurate manner. Shifts took place in early mornings at the Claremont Colleges’ field station, often before sunrise, in cold or wet conditions, and off trails in overgrown areas.

Worked in the Byers Lab at the Odum School of Ecology to conduct four weeks of intensive oyster field sampling in Georgia coastal salt marshes for the ten-week Population Biology of Infectious Disease REU site, followed by five weeks of lab work to dissect oysters and investigate parasite infection trends across the state. I also analyzed the collected data related to macroparasite distribution specifically, and later used this analysis as the foundation for my undergraduate senior thesis.
