Wrote my master thesis together with ABN AMRO where we investigated how to assess sustainability of a software product. The project was divided into three phases where we first collected feasible and relevant software sustainability metrics through literature and by conducting interviews and working groups with employees. Next step was to perform measurements with identified metrics. This was done by using performance counters that could be extracted from a virtual infrastructure administrator (VMware). Finally, we wanted to see if measurements could be compared to assess if one application is relative more sustainable than another. This was simply done by comparing applications with similar characteristics or purposes. Some findings:* There is a gap between what is needed to measure in practice, and what is measurable in terms of software sustainability. For example, "Task Execution Time" and "Lines of code" was mentioned as useful metrics by practitioners but could not be measured in our measurements.* Resource consumption metrics are directly linked to environmental software sustainability and serves as a first step to standardize measurements. For example, power consumption and memory usage are general, direct metrics that can be used for any applications. Although, indirect metrics are important to consider as well but is more challenging since it gets more subjective. An example of an indirect metric is "Fit for purpose" which measures to what degree an application is meeting user requirements.Grade: 9
