The project Green and Atmospheric Water Governance aims to navigate current and future glocal issues in the the field of green water (soil moisture) and atmopsheric water. Whilst most water governance research and policy is limited to blue water, we explore challenges evolving around green and atmospheric water in the context of the Anthropocene, following the research question ‘What are the key social-ecological and technological challenges associated with green and atmospheric water and its relation to land degradation, and how can we design key elements of a proactive multi-level water governance system?’ Using interdisciplinary research methods, we describe the challenges with respect to green and atmospheric water and design principles and instruments for governance.

MSc thesis research on eland antelope (Taurotragus oryx) spatial distribution and habitat suitability in the Sneeuberg Nature Reserve, South Africa. Research is based on modeling outcomes from Species Distribution Model MaxEnt. Outcomes of the thesis will be used to develop an eland management plan for the Compassberg Protected Environment.

La Cañada, Spain

Recognizing increasing droughts, olive farmers in La Cañada, Spain have developed various land management practices to enhance soil water retention. In cooperation with the San Cristobal olive oil cooperative and commissioned by Maria Payá Valdes, this consultancy project aimed at triggering reflection and discussion amongst farmers about their land management practices and how they influence soil water availability.For that purpose, interviews have been carried out with several farmers. Soil profiles were observed and soil moisture measurement were taken. AquAceituna used footage recorded during the interviews and field measurements to create a movie which illustrates the variety of different land management strategies and perceptions.In order to reach our objective of triggering discussion this movie was shown on a workshop which was organised on the 1st of July, 2015. The workshop moreover consisted group discussions to communicate findings from scientific studies relating to the impact of land management on soil water availability, to further increase the reflection of farmers.
