Deshpande’s Optiview is a local optical chain in the city of Nashik, India, owned by my father and uncle. I feel lucky to be born in this family not because I get my spectacles for free, but because the insights of doing business that I get day in, day out. Growing in a business environment benefited me with an early introduction to business jargons. It was during my high school; I did a small inventory control project using MS EXCEL in our shop. It was basically clearance of saturated products for introducing a new range of spectacles, using the same space in the inventory based on market research. Directly or indirectly it injected passion in me for making improvements by using observation, analytical and optimization skills. These skill names, which I didn’t know then, are the skills which now I can’t live without! I chose to do my bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering, owing to my love for Machinery and Automobile sector. While pursuing Engineering, I got to gain a better understanding of optimizing the solution for complex engineering problems, application of quality management tools and automation. During my bachelors, I participated in various events, undertook leadership positions and pursued internships at renowned organizations. As an intern at BOSCH, interaction with the Plant Manager, my mentor, got me drawn to the roles and responsibilities of an Industrial Engineer. According to him, the increasing need to optimize systems and processes by the effective use of resources with high production rate and at the stake of minimum cost is highly feasible with the usage of various tool-sets available in Industrial Engineering. Hence, I choose to pursue Master’s in Industrial Engineering at Texas A&M University, in order to equip myself with these tool-sets. Currently, along with working towards my Master's, I am working as an Graduate teaching Assistant at Mays Business School in the Department of Information & Operations Management. I assist in teaching tools and techniques to design, analyze and improve core operational capabilities including identification of bottleneck, process flow charting, variability reduction, cell design, capacity planning, facility layout planning to an undergraduate and an MBA class using various case studies.
