About Sonal Giani

Hello, I'm Sonal Giani. With over 15 years dedicated to championing LGBTQIA+ rights in India and South Asia, I've had the privilege of working alongside inspiring individuals and communities. Currently, I serve on the UNAIDS Program Coordinating Board as an NGO delegate for the Asia Pacific region and am the Global Senior Advisor for Gender and Inclusion at the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF). In these roles, I focus on providing practical technical assistance and support to help integrate inclusive strategies in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).My journey in advocacy began at The Humsafar Trust, India's pioneering LGBTQIA+ rights organization, where I worked as an Advocacy Manager. Since then, I've been part of founding initiatives like Yaariyan, India’s most extensive LGBTQIA+ youth network, and Umang, a support group for Indian Lesbians, Bisexuals, and Transmasculine individuals. These experiences have been incredibly humbling and have allowed me to contribute to significant movements, such as the legal battle for decriminalizing the LGBTQIA+ community and increasing visibility for marginalized groups in India.I've been fortunate to receive some recognition for my work, including the 'Diversity Leadership Award' from the World HRD Conference in 2016 and the 'Queero' Award from Six Degrees, an LGBTQ Growth Network. But what truly drives me is the opportunity to make a difference and support the creation of a more inclusive and accepting world for everyone.
