Profile bio

About Sonia Muir

I am passionate about volunteering with a focus on our international neighbours who need it most. Currently my husband Gordon and I are on a nine month assignment with the Australian Volunteers Program AVP. We are based in Dili, Timor Leste. Most recently I completed a short online English teaching 'remote' AVP assignment with the management team at a polytechnic College in Mongolia 500kms from UlanBatar. Gordon and I spent 16 rewarding months with AVP in Myanmar (2018-2020) - reluctantly returning due to COVID 19. We also had a wonderful year with AVP in Tonga from March 2013-March 2014. All these experiences were in the field of education and working with young people and teachers to build skills and knowledge. It is always a humbling experience where we learn as much as we teach. I also volunteer at a local St Vinnies shop when I'm home in Kingscliff. In 2015 I volunteered to help organise a very successful TEDX Orange event. My last paid role was at NSW Department of Primary Industries as Acting Group Director Education & Regional Services leading a team working to build skills, knowledge and resilience of rural communities across NSW. I managed a multimillion dollar budget that includes: Tocal College - youth, adult and online educational provider, NSW’s Agricultural Land Use Planning team, Rural Women's Network, Rural Resilience Program and Young Farmer Business Project. I am proud of the impact my statewide teams had to drive growth in primary industries and enjoyed working with such a diverse and creative group of dynamic truly servants of the public.During my career I have loved facilitating leadership opportunities that build competencies of others to blossom through mentoring and coaching. Specialties: education, women’s empowerment, teaching english, leadership, leadership training, management, writing, facilitation, mentoring, word, networking, public speaking and presentation skills, program development, project management, gathering and relaying stories, strategic planning, art, books, email, english, government, teaching, writing,

Listed skills include Program Facilitation, Retreat Facilitation, Public Speaking, Writing, and 26 others.
