This was a 4 doctor family practice with had been established for 36 years at the time. It was the most well organized and efficient office I have ever worked in even to this day.Under the direct supervision of a computer professional, I learned how to convert the accounts receivable from general ledger to computerized system using Threshold Medical Management Software. I also gained basic to intermediate working knowledge of the MS DOS operating environment and Novell Networking systems. And so began my love of computers. In addition I did all insurance coding, billing, appeals and correspondence. I also assisted where needed in phones, filing and front desk reception.
Student Intern In Pathology/Histology Lab And Medical Office Procedures
As a teenage daughter of a mother who was also an MD specializing in Pathology, I had to go to work with her in order to get to spend any time with her. I didn't mind as it was interesting and I had a lot of fun. I began doing transcription of autopsy reports. I then moved on to the histology lab where I learned all processes involved from assisting with gross exam of surgical specimens, to tissue processing, slide preparation and finally H&E stains and some special stains and an occasional frozen section. I later went on to obtain a formal education in Histotechnology. When I was about 15 the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) decided that the Pathologist could no longer be a paid employee of the hospital but must do her own billing for each and every single diagnostic test from a simple urinalysis to, to complex chemistry panels, surgical path procedures etc.... Within a matter of a few weeks I had literally memorized the entire pathology section of the CPT 4 manual and hundreds of ICD-9-CM diagnosis codes. I even had dreams of codes. We billed hundreds of claims a day to Medicare, Medicaid, private payers and self pay, sometimes working 16 hours a day, until one day she decided it was not worth it anymore and transitioned from 20+ years in pathology to family practice where she worked under her friend and colleague Dr. Deo K. Bhati M.D. who was a vascular/general surgeon. I then also worked with them in the billing and all other office procedures of a small town medical practice.
