Sonya Visser is an experienced piano teacher, who holds a Master of Music Studies in Piano Pedagogy from the QLD Conservatorium, Griffith University and an LTCL in piano performance. She operates a private teaching studio in North Lakes, Brisbane and also teaches piano at St Pauls Anglican School in Bald Hills. Sonya is a piano examiner for the Australian Music Examinations Board Qld (AMEB) and the Australian Guild of Music Education (AGMED). Sonya teaches across a wide variety of musical genres, from traditional classical piano, to all contemporary styles. She prides herself on having presented numerous successful exam candidates from early grades through to diploma levels, with major examining bodies such as the AMEB, AGMED and Trinity College of London. All students have received excellent results, including High Distinctions. Sonya has assisted numerous successful years 12 music extension piano candidates over many years, as well as students prepare for tertiary auditions. In 2022 one of her senior students received a full tuition scholarship to the prestigious Berkee College in the USA commencing in 2023.Many of Sonya's students have won major awards in Competitions, the most recent being Laura McCormick receiving 1st place in the International Prominent Pianist Competition, which is an online competition based in New York, via Virtual Concert Halls. As a result of her success, she will perform at Carnegie Hall In April 2024. Other student successes include prizes in the Queensland Youth Music Awards solo section, Queensland Piano Competition, Yamaha Youth Piano Competition, The Petrof National Piano Competition, Keys National Piano Competition and National Piano Excellence Awards in Examinations with the Australian Guild of Music Education. Sonya believes in offering numerous performance opportunities for her students throughout the teaching year, from informal recitals, novelty concerts with prizes, festivals, including keyboard ensemble opportunities. She takes pride in catering to the individual needs of every student, from early childhood, to the hobby player, as well as to the serious advanced level pianist, with the aid of music technology. Sonya aims to develop a love of music in her students and also to ascertain and develop individual abilities to their full potential.
