Hailing from England, Sophie Etchart, 34, speaks Spanish, French, German and English. After receiving her degree at Newcastle University, she took a consulting job that led her to design and execute the Private Equity Foundation / Deutsche Bank Leadership Program: instructional workshops and networking events in partnership with INSEAD business school, France. That year as a strategic HR consultant opened Sophie’s mind and heart to the nonprofit sector.Taking a transcontinental leap, she moved to Peru to run the education department at SKIP, an international development organization. There, she managed an international team of 35 staff and volunteers working with 330 youth aged 3-17 on a comprehension curriculum designed to complement the national public schooling system. This program received several recognitions including one from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation during Sophie’s leadership.Sophie met her husband, an Arizona native, during her time in Peru. She moved to Phoenix in 2012 and spent two years managing the JA BizTown® team at Junior Achievement. An alarming number of the 20K+ students served lacked foundational reading skills. She quickly identified the need for basic reading comprehension support. When the “Move on When Reading” law was announced, the timing was critical to support third graders at-risk of being kept behind and thus, Read Better Be Better was born. RBBB served 60 students in 2015. This school year, the program helped over 1,000 children improve literacy skills and become better learners. In 2017, Sophie was recognized as one of Phoenix Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 younger business leaders making an impact in the Phoenix area. Sophie lives in downtown Phoenix with her husband, son and two dogs.

Founder & CeoRead Better Be Better Jul 2014 - PresentPhoenix, Arizona, UsMission: Connecting young readers and youth leaders to inspire a love of literacy and learning.Vision: A world in which empowered communities demand equitable access to foundational skills.Read Better Be Better (RBBB) is an Arizona-based literacy non-profit that envisions a world in which empowered communities demand equitable access to foundational skills. To achieve this vision, RBBB’s Tier-4 evidence-based literacy program pairs early elementary Readers with 4th – 8th-grade Leaders in a program facilitated by RBBB Program Coaches, many of whom are future educators at local community colleges. During twice-weekly 90-minute sessions, Readers, Leaders, and Program Coaches work to improve concentration, reading comprehension, and the enjoyment of reading – all while bolstering leadership skills. With this unique cross-age peer-tutoring model, RBBB serves not just one, but two students at the same time, and simultaneously provides future educators with valuable classroom experience. Investing in system-wide change, RBBB’s innovative solution operates from the understanding of literacy as a vehicle for social justice, inspiring generations of engaged learners and leaders and propelling the social and material conditions of communities in need. -
