Superstructure Design Lead

Event Summary: Competing teams will each design and build a bespoke toboggan capable steering, braking, and most importantly, capable of safely carrying five people down the mountain. The concrete part of a concrete toboggan is the skis, or any other surface in constant contact with the snow. To top it off, the completed toboggan with concrete skis, (typically) metal roll cage, and the steering and braking mechanisms each team creates must weigh in at less than 350 pounds.My role as Superstructure Lead:- Acted as project manager and engineering design consultant for the superstructure and steering & braking teams, which totaled to be 8 senior engineering students- Completed SolidWorks modeling and Finite Element Analysis to support design iterations and to verify Von Mises stress calculations and Safety Factors- Gave a detailed presentation on our superstructure design choices to the event engineering judges- Rode in the toboggan down the hill

Structural Engineering Intern

My final work term was spent working as a structural engineering intern with Seaspan. Seaspan is Canada's long-term shipbuilding partner and I was fortunate to be a part of their lift and turn engineering group. My role throughout my four months on site included:- Using finite element analysis to model the interaction between the gantry crane and the rotation of ship blocks to design and create lift plans- Creating lift and turn plans for the crane and transportation plans for the SPMTs using AutoCAD and Rhino- Submitting and self-reviewing design calculations for hook and crane loadingThis work term grew my skills as an engineer-in-training and provided me with outstanding professional engineering experience. I also used my time with Seaspan to learn in detail about welding methods and stresses, the theory of finite element analysis, and the importance of explaining why I have made certain design choices throughout a project.

Long Harbour, Newfoundland And Labrador, Canada

This work term offered me a position at Vale's Long Harbour Processing Plant (LHPP) in Newfoundland, Canada. The LHPP is responsible for producing roughly 50,000 tons of high-quality nickel per annum, alongside the production of other base metals such as Cobalt and Copper. This work experience placed me in a project management role, where I completed the following main tasks:- Creation of a spending schedule for a $2,700,000 refurbishment project that would span two years- Field supervision of construction using piping and instrumentation drawings- Ownership over a health and safety project that saw the installation of 10+ alarm systems in semi-permanent structures on site
