I was a member of the University of Copenhagen team, which comprised 9 individuals from diverse academic backgrounds and representing 7 different nationalities, collectively speaking 9 unique languages. Our collaborative efforts were focused on the development of a biodegradable fishing net designed to address the issue of ghost nets. My primary responsibilities within the team encompassed stakeholder engagement, consultation with experts to integrate their insights into the project, laboratory-based research and documentation, trouble- shooting laboratory experiments, team and project management, coordination with other teams, and the dissemination of project-related knowledge to the audience that included high school students, little kids and the non- scientific community. Additionally, I was also responsible for the social media of our team, to spread the word abouut our project, engage with interested people to grow the network, seeking small funding to organize social scientific events.

My project mainly focused on the microbiological and fermentation aspects. It included the production of a secondary metabolite (Mycophenolic Acid- MPA) from a certain fungal species and its scale-up in the fermenter so that MPA can be further utilized to produce synthetic Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API). I was responsible for environmental monitoring and water testing every month. I also got an opportunity to get hands-on training with various microbial cultures in the biosafety cabinet. The lab I worked in maintained a Biosafety Level II and my job included media preparation, culturing, sub-culturing, pooling and harvesting of different species of fungus and bacteria, study and counting of spores, preparation and morphological study of slides under compound microscope and stereoscope, performing various kinds of staining techniques, maintenance and preservation of culture for further use.Along with the microbiology lab, I was also trained to operate HPLC, UV spectrophotometers, industrial fermenters and to formulate and write scientific articles about the experiments.
