I come from a family of practical problem solvers, engineers on both sides. If I have the choice, I will always mend it or build it. If I can scrape through the problem the first time I will be better the second and can reach higher.When it came to the family printing business, I tried both. We cut costs when we had to and explored new and untried avenues to find a way through and out. I have an entrepreneurial streak and the courage to take people with me, using our collective strengths and experience. Nobody can be everywhere at once and you need to identify where you are and where your team are and where they can be.Ultimately we were brought down by a pension liability we couldn’t control. The future is always interesting and I like to think that with the experience I have of both large companies, where internal politics are an important aspect of getting things done but resources are rarely a limiting factor, and small/medium sized companies where the structure is flatter and the vision simpler but resources can be scarce, I can help identify what is important.The current state of advancement of digital and data solutions is almost certainly at the beginning of what can and will be achieved. Every business is embracing these solutions but matching a solution to the problem firstly requires an understanding of the problem. A qualified accountant, a degree in engineering and early career computer science skills learned allow me to be comfortable with all Finance and IT requirements and complex problem solving.ACHIEVEMENTS- Two restructuring exercises were necessary to reduce headcount to allow the business to continue. 2010 saw a reduction of 22% of the workforce and then in 2012, another 33% to bring the remaining staff headcount to 26. A further 5% reduction in wage rates was also negotiated. There were very small wages rises between 2008 and 2020 but the remaining staff stayed loyal to the company.- Transitioning the company towards a more digital future was started in 2013 with the hire of a Computer Science graduate with coding skills and was followed up with a successful Grant Application from _Connect UK of £115,000 in 2015 to research and develop an idea with Keele University of using data to help our existing clients target their customers more effectively. This included the hire of a mathematics PhD graduate from Spain.- Further transitioning was pursued with an idea worked on with Kodak and an NDA was signed with Eastman Kodak Company in 2016 for a global print solution using their worldwide base of installed NexPress Digital presses.
