A pilot study as part of a wider EU funded project called DEMETER. It is becoming increasingly difficult for farmers to detect welfare and health issues due to larger herds and reduced time for farmers to observe individual animals. The pilot aimed to capture and integrate animal behaviour and physiological data into a functional welfare and health scoring frame-work.

I worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Massey University in partnership with DairyNZ on a project within a wider programme on dairy cow health, fertility, and longevity. The primary objective was to investigate the incidence and prevalence of hyperketonaemia (elevated blood ketones); its association with milk production, reproduction and other markers of health in grazing dairy cows; and, the effect of treatment of hyperketonaemia using monopropylene glycol drench.
