In 2019, the City completed its strategic plan and previous body of work as the Assistant to the City Manager expanded under the new role of Director to also include leadership of the office formerly known as the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and to serve as the executive lead to create and implement City-wide community engagement, diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) strategies, framework, policies and trainings, and provide support and accountability methods across the organization for embedding equity into operations.Highlights: Brought forth resolution to declare racism as a public health crisis; Expanded the Neighborhood Match Fund that serves as a model for other philanthropic and community investment models; Created the curriculum and structure of the Neighborhood Leadership Academy designed to embed equity, support authentic engagement and capacity of neighborhood associations; Equity liaison to the Cannabis Justice Work Group and managing the creation of a nonprofit to invest cannabis business donations into communities disproportionately harmed by the war on drugs; Co-created the Community Diversity & Inclusion fellowship for residents to advance DEI in community; Secured over $1.93 million in grants to further embed equity into City processes, among workforce systems leaders and key initiatives such as Participatory Budgeting and the River For All project; Policy and practice change advocacy resulting in the number of Micro Local Business Enterprise certifications to triple; Created a system to identify, track and quantify equity strategies in the annual budget; Championed policy for the creation and support of employee resource groups, the historic human rights ordinance, language access policy, and helped shape the equitable economic development financial incentive program to center equity and authentic engagement; Co-led the creation and implementation of the county-wide Welcome Plan that centers immigrants in policy and practice recommendations.

Created the Neighborhood Match Fund and accessible process to award small grants for resident-led projects designed to be inclusive and strengthen relationships among neighbors; Redesigned the Grand Rapid Neighborhood Summit to double attendance, center resident voice and racial equity, and be structured for greater inclusion and accessibility. Summit was featured by National League of Cities as a model to advance equity and resident engagement; Secured and managed a $1.5M grant to support economic equity in neighborhoods; Served on the Implementation Work Group of a federal grant to support the adaptation of the Seeking Safety curriculum to better serve African-American males, age 16 to 24, in a culturally responsive manner; Served on leadership team of the City’s Racial Equity Here delegation to help operationalize racial equity into City policies and practices; Strategic thought partnership and leadership to City Manager, Executives and Mayor on equity related matters.

Assist with the development, implementation and monitoring of the investments strategies in Grand Rapids to ensure effectiveness and alignment with WKKF indicators, framework and values, and to elevate learning and opportunities for connections; Support WKKF’s Michigan statewide work with the Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan; Assess unsolicited proposals and share analysis with Grand Rapids team to determine if the proposal will be developed further; Project manager and co-facilitator of the WKKF Morning Cafés designed to convene grantees to network, partner, share learning and to foster stronger collective action for systemic change; Liaison to the WKKF Community Leadership Network (CLN) Fellowship and serve as the WKKF representative on the Nonprofit Technical Assistance (NPTA) fund board; Assist in maintaining strategic relationships with other foundations and other key decision makers.
