Most recently, he also formed the River Valley Music Company offering DJ services and live music for Southeast Oklahoma and Northwest Arkansas. His career in social and community service began in August 1996. That year, he began volunteering with the Olde Naples Downtown Redevelopment program. It is through this program that educated him on the importance of historical preservation and revitalization.Since then, he has worked in with other downtown planning entities in places such as Ybor City outside Tampa, Chicago, Tulsa, and Okmulgee. In 2012, he began an ambitious program to revitalize the downtown district in Poteau, Oklahoma. This program was completed in 2017.His writing career began in 2003 when he formed Oklahoma Traveler. Initially, he began taking on jobs as a freelance ghostwriter. These jobs required him to travel to different towns across the state, research their history, and write articles for local publications. Oklahoma Traveler focuses on tourism and history of towns across Oklahoma. The business was formed after I moved to Okmulgee, Oklahoma from Chicago, Illinois. During this time, we began an intensive study of the history of Okmulgee. After publishing our findings, I was hired to further research nearby towns. From that point, it was evident that people were hungry for information on Oklahoma's history, especially surrounding the more rural portions of the state. The concept for Oklahoma Traveler was born.Since that time, I have published five books relating to Oklahoma. Two, now out of print, were published through the University of Oklahoma Press and three were self published, with another in the works. As technology changes, our team continues to evolve. Originally, most of the work through Oklahoma Traveler was ghostwriting for other publishers. Today, I continue to ghostwrite and feel that print media plays an important role, much of the content has been moved online in order reach a much broader audience.
Downtown Revitalization, Economic Development, Business Retention and Recruiting, Cultural Event Planner and facilitator, Preservation, and Historical ResearchThe progress that was completed in Downtown Poteau during my time stems from a series of conversations with former mayor Don Barns between 2010 and 2011. Through those discussions, a group of local residents created The Poteau Improvement Project. We were in the process of filing for a 501c3 when I was asked to take over as director of the downtown area. Through negotiations, many of the initiatives formed through the Poteau Improvement would be rolled over, which included sustainable, long-term improvements throughout the downtown district. Initially, I had offered to do this on a volunteer basis as I have done in the past. This was to help build up funding for the organization. The major projects outlined through the Downtown Poteau Low Cost Revitalization Project were completed within three years, which included new streets and sidewalks, upgrades to the pocket park, general cleanup and landscaping, building upgrades, and through a heavy marketing campaign I was able to reduce the vacancy rate from over 80% down to 6.2%. Most of the projects completed downtown was done through donations, including a substantial personal investment of $32,000 over three years. Due to the overwhelming support of the community and through the assistance of the city, Poteau can now boast of a clean and thriving downtown district.
