Founder
As a mental health activist, I witnessed the mental health crisis permeating Gen Z and the increasing challenges younger generations face due to social media and insufficient mental health infrastructure. In response, I created a non-digital product: a subscription box that engaged children in mental health education in a fun and de-stigmatized way through books, crafts, and other hands-on projects. After pitching the product concept to the executive director at the mental health nonprofit where I was interning, we submitted an application for a local community engagement grant. We were awarded a small sum of money which we used to order boxes and source/print the items each box would contain. I hand-illustrated 50 boxes, designed original box items (e.g., parent-child conversation guide), and consulted with child psychology experts. Seeking to include the input of the community I was building for, I facilitated focus groups with parents and their children. Ultimately, I distributed the prototype boxes to families along the east coast.Upon entering NYU, I started to recognize that while this subscription box was helpful as a short-term solution and mitigated some individualized issues, it fell short of tackling some larger, structural injustices that inhibit equitable access to resources that enable mental well-being. Be it corporate favorability and consumerism or racism and environmental injustice, human flourishing faces intersectional, cross-disciplinary, multi-scalar obstacles. Gaining this knowledge was humbling. I had to pause a project that I hoped would have a demonstrable impact because I realized it would not make a dent in resolving systemic injustice. However, stepping away from it did not mean I grew hopeless. I only grew more curious and determined to understand the complexities of our global systems – social, environmental, political, economic, and spiritual – in order to catalyze meaningful, honest, enduring change.
