As an academic lawyer, trained in private practice and schooled in philosophy as an undergraduate, I'm passionate about finding just solutions to practical problems. In my research, I often try to find ways by which new insights can be brought to practical legal problems by placing the law within its policy, historical, or indeed philosophical context. Primarily, my research concerns issues within the law of obligations, including contract and tort/delict but is not confined to these areas.Over the last few years, I have written about the civil liability of emergency services, i.e. professional negligence of first responders (2018); the challenging policy context of vicarious liability in Scotland and England & Wales (2019); and the liability of persons suffering from mental disorders or periods of temporary incapacity (forthcoming). I have also been extensively involved in law reform debates in Scotland concerning the law of defamation (2019; 2020).Through my historical work, I have completed my manuscript on the development of modern contract law in Scotland with reference to developments in other European jurisdictions (forthcoming). I have also researched how the law and attitudes of traders affected the resolution of the first market crash in 1720 (2019). Both projects track how prevailing ethical attitudes can shape the interpretation and use of private law.
