Starting as an attaché fraud investigation for the Special Tax Inspectorate, I promoted to the strategic support department. Within these functions, I took on new types of investigations, assumed responsibility for key dossiers, and collaborated with numerous Belgian and international government organizations. In doing so, I improved my financial and analytical competencies, further developed my networking skills, and demonstrated my ability to build robust dossiers that I am accountable for.

As a protection officer, I investigated applications for international protection. This required gaining a maximum of information in a minimal timeframe and making legally motivated decisions, based on partial information. The work sparked my interest in the legal aspects of the work I do and required me to be thorough and ‘think on my feet’. I also learned how to perform structured interviews and work with an interpreter. More importantly, it helped me broaden my perspective and increase my cultural sensitivity, while keeping focused on my objectives. The job required the immense amounts of preparation, empathy, and respect that are needed to gain the trust of people coming from extreme contexts within the scope of a single interview.
