About Steffi Smith
I started my professional career as a middle school Spanish teacher. I would spend my lesson planning time coming up with creative ways to get my students excited about learning Spanish. Like Holden in The Catcher in the Rye, I wanted to "catch" my students before they become desultory in learning a new language, and show them that there is much more than just conjugating verbs to learning a language -- that there's also a culture, a people and a rich history across multiple countries -- that learning Spanish could give them an opportunity to propel them into new opportunities, new experiences, as it did for me. As I reflect on my early days of my professional career, I realize my affinity to teaching translates well to my career in advising organizations to help their people realize their full potential. In those hours of lesson planning, I brainstormed ways in which I could challenge my students to think about the why and how behind learning a new language. In a sense, my teaching practice required helping my students to unlock their minds and embrace learning a foreign language.These same skills that I learned as a teacher apply to my current conversations with my partners. Instead of teaching students to learn a new language, I'm now consulting Fortune 500 companies on how to best accelerate the development of their people through coaching at scale. To this day, I am still driven by the principal of opening minds, be it students or business partners, to rethink their current perspectives and approaches. A former Spanish teacher, transformed consultant, connecting with and empowering others has been the main driving force that has illuminated my career.
