Animals must first evaluate the quality of a food source via sensory cues such as smell, taste and touch. In addition, animals make the decision to eat only when the internal state encodes that they are energy depleted or hungry. I used the adult fruit fly as a model system to study the regulation of the feeding control circuitry. The goal of my research was to identify neuron populations that underlie feeding behavior and determine their specific contributions to the behavior. To identify these neurons, I developed a simple, high-throughput feeding assay in which well-fed control flies do not eat when presented with food. Starved controls, however, ingest an abundance of food. By acutely modulating the activity of defined subsets of neurons in well-fed flies while monitoring feeding, I directly identified neurons whose activation can mimic the starvation state and identified brain regions involved in all aspects of feeding behavior control.
