STEPHANIE FLEISCHMANN is a librettist and playwright whose texts serve as blueprints for intricate three-dimensional sonic and visual worlds. Her “lyrical monologues” (The New York Times), “smart” libretti (Opera News), plays, and music-theater works have been presented internationally and across the U.S.She has collaborated with composers including Chris Cerrone, Michael Hersch, Avner Dorman, David Hanlon, Julia Adolphe, Jeremy Howard Beck, and Olga Neuwirth, among others. Her work for theater has appeared at venues including EMPAC, Noorderzon (the Netherlands), Exit Festival (France), Roundhouse Studio (UK), Here Arts Center, the Ojai Festival, the Public Theater, and many more. Her most recent play, SOUND HOUSE, premiered in 2018 in NYC produced by New Georges.She has received grants/fellowships from the Virginia B Toulmin Foundation; a Venturous Capital Grant from the Venturous Tides Foundation; 3 New York State Council on the Arts Individual Artist Commissions; a NEA Opera/Music-Theater commission; Opera America Development and Mapfund grants for THE LONG WALK; the Frederick Loewe Award; a Howard Fellowship in Playwriting; the Tennessee Williams fellowship; grants from New Music USA and the New York State Music Fund, and 2 New York Foundation for the Arts fellowships, among others. She is a former New Dramatists playwright and Playwrights Center Core Writer and has received residencies from Macdowell, American Lyric Theater, the Playwrights Center, HARP, New Georges (Audrey), Hedgebrook, New Victory PlayLabs, Briclab, the Chocolate Factory, the Hudson Opera House, and Mabou Mines.
