About Stephanie Oliver

Hi, I'm Stephanie Oliver and I am a product designer. I became UX Design while working as an Occupational Therapy (OT) - Team Lead, providing support to children with special needs who were using speech-generating and medical devices. I noticed that families were unable to carry over the use of augmentative communication devices at home because they were having trouble understanding how to access the device's functions. I began to think to myself, "What would it look like to create a product that is user-friendly that anyone could use?" I didn't realize it at the time, but I was actually building my very first POV statement. With a master's degree in OT and a bachelor's in psychology under my belt, I decided to embark upon a career as a product designer -working as an OT by day and a User Experience Designer by night slowly making UX my full-time career. I wanted to continue solving problems related to technology usage. The prospect of a more enriched, captivating, and accessible internet intrigued me, and I slowly began to dedicate all of my efforts towards that. I've always been a creative problem solver and knew this career would allow me to showcase my creative side while facilitating successful internet experiences. I'm passionate about creating accessible apps and websites so users can seamlessly complete meaningful tasks. This career requires a significant level of empathy, a feeling that people often shy away from because empathy means bearing one another's burdens. However, I’m a firm believer that if one struggles then we all struggle, so I’m ignited by the idea of helping others and understanding their pain points. I’ve become an avid Figma enthusiast. I would describe my style as modern organic. When completing projects for clients, I start by understanding the user’s concerns, then collect data through interviews, and competitive analysis. My go-to strategies for successful ideation include collaboration, card-sorting, and referencing usability heuristics. Prototyping affords me with important user feedback and prevents countless hours of designing a useless product. When refining prototypes, I often gravitate towards the Kano method and feedback grids. User feedback has become an important tool because they will be the ones using the product that I design. Overall, I’m excited about this journey and welcome opportunities to continue to employ my skill set as a User Experience Designer!
