Postdoctoral ScholarPenn State College Of Medicine Dec 2019 - PresentHershey, PaWorking on translational research projects in the lab of Dr. Amanda Nelson in the Department of Dermatology. These projects are focused on dermatological conditions, such as hidradenitis suppurativa, which have underlying immune, inflammatory, and structural mechanisms. The most recent publication outlined the epidermal inflammatory cytokine, chemokine, and immune cell responses using over 100 HS and healthy control samples. This study further emphasized that topical therapies may be effective options for HS patients. This phase of my training has taught me how to work with patient samples. To accomplish these projects, a focus on team science and involvement of our clinical colleagues has been very important.Technical expertise involved in these projects includes qPCR, western blots, culture of keratinocytes from healthy control and HS patient samples, drug treatment of cells, RNAseq, histology, microscopy, and processing of blood samples. -
Graduate AssistantPenn State College Of Medicine Aug 2013 - Jul 2019Hershey, PaWorked on three independent projects involving delineation of basic mechanisms involved in the onset of lupus. The first project focused on understanding the role of apoptotic cell accumulation and related signaling mechanisms in disease development. The second project focused on the role of cytosolic RNA sensing pathways in lupus related immune activation. The third project focused on the role of miRNA in promoting both normal and autoimmune B cell responses.Developed expertise using in vivo (mouse) models. Frequently performed various mouse injections and treatments. Assessed parameters with complex multicolor flow cytometry, histology, ELISA, ELIspot, RNA isolation/purification, and qPCR (including arrays). Developed familiarity with data analysis and statistical methodology.Utilized in vitro culture systems to study B cell, T cell, macrophage, and dendritic cell function. Frequently assessed cellular activation, cell viability, cytokine production, and proliferation.Published multiple peer reviewed papers, wrote several grants (funded and unfunded), and presented my work at national and regional meetings. Volunteered to give talks internally to various audiences when possible. Developed expertise with FloJo, Graphpad Prism, Endnote, Biorender, Microsoft Office, and Adobe (Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator) software throughout this process.Designed and implemented a new focus area in the lab on miRNAs in lupus development. Assisted in securing funding for this project through grant mechanisms. Successfully managed this project from its rudimentary stages.Discussed and presented results to rheumatology clinicians in the context of disease.Worked with a diverse group of researchers and contributed to other ongoing projects in the lab, including frequent editing of papers, grants, and abstracts. -
Student ResearcherMessiah College Jun 2012 - May 2013Mechanisburg, PaMy undergraduate research involved the utilization of molecular and cellular biology techniques to generate tools for the study of tumor immunology in mouse models. Ultimately, this led to the successful generation of a construct required for making a TCR transgenic mouse. Further, cell lines expressing an SV40 tumor antigen lacking several immunogenic MHC Class II epitopes were established.Learned molecular cloning, bacterial culture, mammalian cell culture, PCR, gel electrophoresis, transfection, and DNA purification techniques. -
