Research Directions was established to provide consulting services to a range of clientsrequiring expert scientific assistance. This included acting as an expert witness for lawfirms and providing high-level technical support for chemical and pharmaceuticalmanufacturers.During this early period I identified a significant capability gap in Australia � formanufacture of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs). In Australia, unlike othercountries, this activity does not require Good Manufacturing Practice conditions forveterinary APIs and therefore offers less challenging regulatory requirements than thosefor APIs for the human pharmaceutical market. We therefore commenced our activitiesin this area. I leased a small laboratory at a QUT and employed two staff to undertakethis work in July, 2000.From these humble beginnings, the company's activities have grown into a diverseportfolio of activities including: Provision of chemistry services, including synthesis, under contract for a variety of clients. This activity allows us to explore those industries in Australia that undertake chemistry activities but do not have internal access to chemical or synthetic chemistry expertise. We have completed many projects of interest to us and provided a valuable service to our clients. Synthetic method development projects for either APIs or other valuable compounds such as indicators of biological activities and analytical standards. These are generally medium term projects that lead to sales of products. The prospective clients and expected price for the compounds are generally identified

My primary position with UniQuest was Business Manager, Biological and HealthScience Group. This was a new position involving the provision of advice to a widerange of clients, negotiating contracts, selecting personnel and providing a generalmanagement service. During this time I also managed the University of Queensland'spatent portfolio. Major contracts included:Incitec Microbial Control of Root Diseases in Root CropsCastlemaine Perkins Biological Treatment of Waste Stream

The position at Prince Charles involved the maintenance of drug detection and analysisby HPLC, GC, and GCMS together with the development of assays for new drugs. Onespecific project was the synthesis of immunological materials producing enzymeimmunoassays for drug analysis in kit form. All of the work undertaken provedsuccessful in producing antibodies with required activity.
