The Commonwealth’s Attorney prosecutes defendants, for violation of State and County Codes, in the County’s Circuit, General District and Juvenile and Domestic Relations Courts, while appeals are pursued to the Virginia Court of Appeals and The Supreme Court of Virginia in Richmond. Other specific duties are assigned by the Code of Virginia, such as enforcing provisions of the State and Local Government Conflict of Interests Act. In the course of performing the duties of the office, the Commonwealth's Attorney serves as Patrick County's Chief Law Enforcement Officer, as well as consults with and provides legal advice to the County’s Sheriff’s Department. The office of the Commonwealth's Attorney is separate and distinct from that of the County Attorney, who is an appointed legal adviser to and representative of the County Board of Supervisors.
