About Stephanie Baker
ABOUT ME:I am a Lecturer in Electronic Systems and the Internet of Things with James Cook University, with this role including teaching, research, and engagement. I currently teach subjects across the entire engineering journey, from teaching programming to first-year students through to research skills for our fourth-year Honours thesis students. My teaching portfolio includes extensive programming, electric circuits, semiconductor electronics, mathematics, and research skills. In 2022, my team and I received the JCU Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning for our teaching work.In terms of research, my primary interests are artificial intelligence, rural and remote healthcare, and biomedical engineering. I am currently available to supervise PhD projects in these areas. My current research projects include developing a smart home system for aged care, and the development of non-invasive blood pressure monitoring for preterm infants in neonatal ICU settings. I have been awarded several grants for my research, including the Northern Australia Regional Digital Health Collaborative (NARDHC) Seed Funding grant and the Townsville Hospital and Health Service (THHS) Study, Education, and Research Trust Account (SERTA) Fund grant. My research has attracted over 1200 citations, with publications in a range of high-impact journals including IEEE Communications Surveys & Tutorials, Knowledge Based Systems, and Computer Methods and Programs in Biomedicine. I also hold several engagement roles. I am the co-head of the Engagement portfolio for the Engineering department. In this role, I lead a team dedicated to effectively engaging with industry, schools, and tge broader community. I am also the College of Science and Engineering Engagement & Marketing Representative for Cairns engineering. In this role, I have organised and run several key engagement and marketing events relevant to the engineering group, as well as providing support for events relevant to the broader CSE. This role is a continuation of my involvement in engagement and marketing at JCU, which I have been active in since 2014.EDUCATION:I completed my PhD with James Cook University in 2021, with my dissertation focusing on the use of machine learning for vital sign monitoring and patient prognosis in critical care settings. My PhD research was awarded the Dean's Award for Research Higher Degree Excellence. I also hold a Bachelor of Engineering (Computer Systems) with Class I Honours from James Cook University.

Lecturer (Jcu College Pathways Program)
In my role as lecturer for JCUC, I delivered three first-year engineering subjects to a small cohort of international students. These students were undertaking their Diploma of Engineering alongside English studies to build their language and engineering to a level that allowed direct entry into the second year of the Bachelor of Engineering program. This role included the delivery of lectures, tutorials, and practicals. I also developed and marked several assessment items. One subject was delivered primarily online due to COVID-19 lockdowns, giving me excellent experience in teaching through online tools.
Maths Refresher Course Facilitator
As a maths refresher course facilitator, I aided in the running of several short courses at the commencement of each semester. These courses cover fundamental maths topics and aim to help students improve their maths skills to the standard required by their university degree. A wide variety of students with a wide variety of skill levels attended, and my role was to provide each individual student with the type and level of support that they require in a small group environment.
Academic Tutor
In this role, I tutored a range of subjects including Electric Circuits, Electric Theory, and Automatic Control 2. These subjects are taken by a range of students in their first, second, and third years. My role primarily involved running weekly organized tutorials, and providing assistance with the tutorial material. I also ran practical sessions using electrical components, MicroCap, and MATLAB, and aided in the marking of students' assignments and tests.
Peer Assisted Study Session (Pass) Leader
I was a PASS leader for a wide range of first-year subjects in the fields of engineering, IT, and mathematics. In this role, I was responsible for planning interactive lesson materials every week that encourage students to work together in order to solve complex problems. PASS is aimed at first year students, so a large part of the role was to help students settle into university life, learn how to work with their peers, and develop good study techniques. I have lead both face-to-face and online PASS sessions in this role, vastly improving my communications skills and my ability to teach through different mediums.
Engineering Student Ambassador
This casual role primarily involved assisting in the development and delivery of STEM engagement events, including Open Days, university experience events, and community or school-based events. I also undertook significant science communication exercises, presenting my research and uni experiences in a range of school and community settings.
Instructor And Course Developer
In this role I developed course materials for teaching primary school aged kids fundamentals of programming and the Internet of Things, using Micro:Bits, Arduinos, and Raspberry Pis. I also led sessions for after-school, weekend, and school holiday programs.
It Support
My role as IT Support at John Flynn was to maintain common room computer and printers to ensure that they are up to date, working efficiently and are virus-free. I also made myself available to students living on college who require any technology support. I finished this job when I left college, as it was a role available only to current students of the college.
Tutor
My work as a residential tutor with the John Flynn College involved remaining competent in all first year subjects offered to engineering students at James Cook University, as I was called upon to provide assistance for every subject. I made myself available to students for several hours a week, and was contactable via email outside of normal tutoring hours. I held this role for the entire time that I was living at John Flynn College.
Summer Student
For the duration of my internship with Cochlear at their headquarters in Macquarie Park, I worked on Clinical Care Software for the benefit of audiologists and recipients. My primary role involved developing a mechanical test automation system using a robotic arm. My programming skills were greatly improved, and my knowledge in the areas of medical devices, mechatronics (small robotics), Arduino, TestComplete, testing & test automation, and software development practices were greatly improved. I was also called upon to present several demos of my product to other interested parties within the company.
