Manager, Data And Research
Manager, Data & Research
- Built a collaborative team of five, managing for cohesion, retaining high performers in an agency and time of high turnover. Developed a positive environment with weekly team meetings; biweekly individual meetings; project-specific, professional, or strategic coaching as needed; transparency; and building confidence and trust in our work. - Spearheaded a homeless services systems analysis that relied on collecting and incorporating stakeholder input into the design; produced a report that delivered a simple message for a complex system grounded in our quantitative estimates which has been referenced multiple times by policy makers since publication. - Established a data product to serve multiple functions (tracking clients for the operations team, reporting progress metrics to funders and community partners, and monitoring the process of over a dozen participating government agencies) in service of a high-priority effort to permanently house people with federal recovery funding; process included identifying all client needs, developing and communicating project plans, establishing clear expectations on timeline, deliverables, and recurrence. - Participate in multidisciplinary teams to monitor homeless service providers’ performance through data quality and develop strategy for improving contractual performance and improved client outcomes; - Developed detailed workflows to support internal data review, to continually improve timeliness and accuracy of products, and to collaborate effectively within LAHSA and outside partners.
Assistant Project Scientist
- Advanced the center’s research on exogenous lactate infusion in traumatic brain injured patients from preliminary stages to FDA IND approval and safety phase II clinical trial application. - Crafted clinical lactate infusion standard operating procedure using a point-of-care lactate meter to meet the research study goal; collaborated with the research nurse and clinical bedside teams to accomplish the first six successful safety studies on severely brain injured ICU patients. - Improved translation between the center’s animal and human studies by including nutritional therapy, blood glucose, and other vitals collected continuously by ICU electronic charting systems in analyses of research study outcomes; completed a clinical research certificate in translational sciences and biostatistics. - Collaborated with neurocellular biologist studying to combine proteomic and metabolomic analyses of an in vitro cellular model of traumatic brain injury.
Postdoctoral Researcher
Conducted follow-up analyses of a randomized, within-patient crossover study conducted by the BIRC comparing the impact of glycemic control on cerebral metabolism (Vespa et al Crit Care Med 2012). My contributions to this project include matching clinical data (medications, laboratory results, vitals, etc.) to assess and characterize glycemic control studies; quantifying glucose turnover and cerebral oxidation rates using isotope tracer techniques; and quantifying blood and CSF metabolites in samples collected during infusion studies with NMR spectroscopy. Our manuscript shows an increase in endogenous systemic ketone concentrations when blood glucose was targeted to a lower range (tight glycemic control targeting 80-110 mg/dL) compared with a higher range (loose glycemic control targeting 120-150 mg/dL). The issue of ketosis in TBI patients in the ICU is important because it is a sign of undernourishment and/or another means of the body working to feed the injured brain.
Nmr Assistant
Maintain NMR spectrometers and train an average of 2 new users every week on safety concerns and data acquisition.
Magnetic Resonance Researcher
Designed, performed, and analyzed magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopy and imaging experiments. Developed new spectroscopy and MRI techniques. Applied MR physics, specifically non-linear field and relaxation theory, to clinical problems. Initiated, developed, and coordinated a multidisciplinary and multi-site collaboration between a materials science group at UCLA and a physical chemistry group at National Taiwan University, which led to a publication in Biomaterials. Programmed and de-bugged simulations in Matlab to verify experimental results with MR theory. Presented posters at the Experimental NMR Conference (ENC) in 2007 & 2010.
Chemistry Teaching Assistant
* Led discussion sessions for courses on chemical structures, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, and physical biochemistry. * Taught an introductory chemistry laboratory class, leading and assisting 20 students while they performed lab work. * Prepared lectures to review concepts and problem solving skills, met with students individually during office hours, and offered review sessions prior to exams.* Awarded the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Excellence in Teaching award in 2006.
Mirzayan Science And Technology Policy Graduate Fellow
* Communicated technical scientific information to a broad audience to inform, support and argue the conclusions of the National Research Council (NRC) committees. * Wrote, revised, and supplemented text for two NRC committee reports, "Electricity from Renewable Sources: Status, Progress, and Impediments" and "Assessment of Technologies for Improving Light-Duty Vehicle Fuel Economy."* Fellow for the Board on Energy and Environmental Systems in the Division of Engineering and Physical Sciences.
