About Stephanie Peña
Stephanie Peña is currently the Inclusive Education Policy & Development Lead for Humanity & Inclusion where she provides direct support to country programs with inclusive education projects, works with governments to prioritize disability inclusive education initiatives through policy and practice, and builds relationships with donors and partners to advocate globally for more funding and mainstreaming for disability inclusion in development and humanitarian projects. Her area of expertise center around the right to a quality education and lifelong learning for all–especially those from marginalized groups, such as learners with disabilities, girls, refugees, etc. Stephanie was previously the Inclusive Education Coordinator at the Global Campaign for Education-US where she led the Inclusive Education & Early Childhood Community of Practice and global advocacy for the right to quality and inclusive education for all. She also spent the first two years of her doctoral program as a Research Assistant with the Inclusive Development Partners, working on the USAID Multi-Country Study on Inclusive Education (MCSIE) evaluation in Cambodia, Malawi, and Nepal. Prior to beginning her doctoral program, Stephanie served as a US Peace Corps Response Volunteer in the Eastern Caribbean through partnership with the Ministry of Education in Grenada. She spent the majority of her service with local special education schools providing literacy training for teachers, reading assessments for students, and creating parent support groups for families. She is currently working on building on this experience through her dissertation work that aims to analyze current teacher training and teacher attitudes towards inclusive education, to find local solutions to further support and prepare teachers to work with learners with disabilities. Prior to her Peace Corps service, she worked as a Regional Inclusion Coordinator in New York City with community organizations and schools dedicated to the inclusion of children with disabilities throughout Manhattan and the Bronx. Stephanie is a Ronald E. McNair Scholar from the University of Washington where she received her Bachelor’s degree in Gender, Women & Interdisciplinary Studies. She has since received her Master’s degree in International Educational Development from Teachers College, Columbia University, where she was a Research Consultant for the YCAB Foundation in Jakarta, Indonesia.
