In my sophomore year at Emerson College, I applied to be a producer for the largest student-run award show in the country after working as an assistant to the executive producer at the time. I was denied because according to the supervisor “What did I know about producing as a public relations major?” The following year, I worked as the creative executive producer for a news broadcasting series and the executive producer, co-director, and editor for a full-length multi-media musical. I returned to that same producer and was offered a position as creative producer for the show’s gala. In my junior year of college, I took crisis communication and presented reports for tech companies and the government I asked my professor how to get a start in that profession. He told me that companies don’t usually have entry-level positions for crisis comms. Post-graduation, I moved to New York to work at BerlinRosen as a crisis communication and legal affairs intern. In my core classes, I was usually the only Black woman. I knew I had to look outside of the classroom to find the experience I was looking for. So, in the summer of 2022, I started freelancing and doing publicity for new creators and start-ups. All of this to say, if I want something bad enough, I will do what needs to be done to accomplish the task at hand.
