Steve Baker, a retired science teacher, is the principal of Virtual High School (VirtualHighSchool.com), a private school in Bayfield, Ontario, Canada that offers Ontario Secondary School Diploma credits and diploma entirely online to students around the world. Steve is a pioneer in online course development in Canada, forming the beginnings of VHS in 1996 with a single biology course. VHS now has 20 full-time administrative staff and over 80 part-time educators serving approximately 5000 students in Ontario and around the world. VHS does not use textbooks. To engage its students, the 65 courses at VHS are written in house with a large emphasis on quality content and interactive instructional design. VHS is a school that focuses on providing a student-centered approach to learning. Students control when and how they do their course work and they have the flexibility to complete courses from anywhere at their own paces. VHS emphasizes excellence in all aspects of education and is setting the standards for asynchronous online learning.
