My interests are in residential energy/environmental systems and building envelopes, and their impact on the indoor environment. In my current role I investigate the impact of HVAC system design, operation, maintenance and failure on the indoor environment, including humidity and humidity-related issues that can lead to mold or water damage. This area of research has become more critical as people migrate to warmer, more humid climates where HVAC systems are a necessity rather than an option. Changes in global weather patterns coupled with population migration to less hospitable climates requires a re-thinking of HVAC system design, as well as the education of home owners as to the limits of use and maintenance requirements of the HVAC system and building envelope.
