At the age of 18, he won an Open Scholarship to the Royal College of Music to study with Professors Kenneth Piper and Hugh Bean --both pupils of the great English violinist, Albert Sammons. Whilst there,he won every violin prize open to him including the Medal of the Worshipful Company of Musicians,a Leverhulme Scholarship,The Craxton Trust Award and 1st Prize in The Royal Overseas League Competition. After completing a postgraduate year of study at the Royal College of Music and further study with Professor David Takeno, he was appointed co-leader of the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 24-- a position he held until taking up his present post of leader of the BBC Symphony Orchestra.In addition to his BBC role, he is also in demand as a guest leader,and has led all the British orchestras and a number of orchestras in America,Europe and Asia.As a concertmaster he has collaborated with some of the world's finest conductors including Pierre Boulez,Bernard Haitink,Mariss Jansons,Witold Lutoslawski,Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti,Sir Georg Solti,Sir Michael Tippett,Maxim Shostakovich and Klaus Tennstedt.As a soloist,Stephen has appeared regularly with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and other orchestras and has given the UK premiere of the Korngold Violin Concerto(London 1982)the UK premiere of the Detlev Glanert Violin Concerto(London 2011) and the World premiere of Elgar's 'Etudes Characteristiques'(London 1987)He coaches and teaches at all the London Music Colleges and has sat on the panels of the BBC Young Musicians Competition,Royal Philharmonic Society Awards and Help musicians UK.In March 2017,Stephen was made an Honorary Fellow of the Guild of Musicians and Singers in recognition of 'an outstanding contribution to orchestral music,solo performance and orchestral coaching '.
