I am a molecular and computational biologist at the Wellcome Sanger Institute near Cambridge, UK. My research group is focused on understanding changes in the genetic diversity of human and veterinary helminth (worm) parasites over time, to understand both their evolutionary history and how they will adapt to change in the future. We primarily use genomic approaches as a tool to understand these changes at different scales, from analysing different parasite populations throughout the world to fine-scale differences between cell types in an individual organism. We complement this work by developing high-quality genomes and genomic resources for the community. Our work seeks to characterise the genetic mechanisms by which parasites adapt to different environments and selection pressures, and use this information to identify new ways to diagnose, monitor and control them.
