Joining this ambitious, growing Mechanical and Electrical Contractor, Stephen has added his knowledge of big company procedures and systems whilst maintaining his flexible and dynamic approach to his work. A flexibility that allows him to adapt to suit the needs of the most demanding Clients.

At the time of joining, Archer Hoblin was struggling on the M&E side. Stephen was brought in and immediately stabilised the management of M&E across the company. This was followed by a period of steady improvements to how building services were managed.This was achieved through the implementation of systems and processes to manage the installation of services and sub-contractors from design through installation, to commissioning and closing out. Stephen was solely responsible for the signing off procedures being set-up which instilled confidence in Clients that works were being carried out correctly and to specification. In many instances this in turn led to the timely release of final account payments and retentions.Archer Hoblin were a construction company with a history in creating new basements including underpinning, piling and latterly, high end, whole house refurbishments. The social housing arm was responsible for creating living spaces in conjunction with housing associations. Archer Hoblin had a turnover in 2010 of £15M.

Mace Plus Ltd are the fixed price main contractor arm of Mace Ltd. Stephen joined Mace Plus Ltd on the construction of the £33M new-build “Bridge Academy”, Hackney, as part of the Government Academies program. He was responsible for delivering the £7M M&E package right through to commissioning, handover and client training. His work also involved understanding the procurement strategies and how the M&E Services were split into work packages.Stephen has worked with the Metropolitan Police on their framework agreement projects to provide new Custody Suites and Patrol Bases. It was Stephen’s responsibility to determine the M&E package splits, write the project package specific scopes of works, issue tenders and analyse the tender returns.

Stephen’s role within HWA was primarily to assist project managers and site managers in all services installation related matters. This included for example, the checking of drawings for interfacing of services with the structure and finishes, chairing meetings with sub-contractors and the design team, checking installations, monitoring progress, overseeing commissioning activities and ensuring record documentation is in place.Working within the role for over 8 years allowed Stephen to develop an in-depth understanding of where coordination or interfacing issues are likely to occur, the problems that often arise in high quality refurbishment projects and what steps can be taken to avoid them. Stephen has experience of temporary services solutions and has installed schemes to deal with, for example, heating of screeds prior to floor laying and providing suitable environmental conditions for installation of bespoke joinery.
