Accepted within weeks to the British Transport Police having received no communication from the Met or Surrey Police until months later.Joined British Transport Police in July 1978, Serving statutory four year period in uniform working in South East London. Having worked in a covert intelligence cell in Northern Ireland in the army, I found myself attached to a plain-clothed crime squad tackling South American 'PickPocket & Robbery' gangs working London's transport system.This gave me enormous experience attending both Crown and Magistrates Courts. The entire area was commonly known as ‘Bandit Country’. The border separating Eire (Southern Ireland), with Northern Ireland, which forms part of the United Kingdom, was, and still is nothing more than an invisible line. Stretching across both countries were over 200 border checkpoints spanning 500 km east to west. It was here that I learned, hands on, about border security, both practically and from a govenrment legislation stand point. Rocket attacks, mortar bombing and sniper fire on these checkpoints manned by the police and the military were prolific. Further north in Northern Ireland were still more attacks carried out on the police, military and general public. IED’s (Improvised Explosive Devices), human and arms trafficking, illegal vehicle checkpoints, abductions and cold-blooded murders were a daily occurrence. These atrocities were committed by the terrorist organisation, the Provisional Irish Republican Army, commonly referred to as the IRA. These terrorists were either laid dormant in sleeper cells, already based in Northern Ireland, or they’d illegally cross the border from the south (Eire) and hit their target, hightailing back to the sanctuary of Southern Ireland (Eire) or go back to ground in Northern Ireland. This active theatre was no different to what our armed forces are experiencing in Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan, and to a lesser extent, what’s happening on many border crossings today. -
