I was a Deputy County Attorney from September, 2013 through early December, 2014 before being promoted to First Deputy County Attorney. As part of the litigation division, I was tasked with numerous civil litigation matters, including defending the Kauai Police Department in Section 1983 lawsuits, as well as defending the County in various employment lawsuits. As First Deputy, I continued my litigation work while adding management, administrative, and budgeting responsibilities.

My practice focused on two areas: criminal defense and commercial real estate. In the criminal defense area, I became a member of the Criminal Justice Act Panel for the Seventh Circuit, which allows the court to appoint me to represent indigent clients in their federal appeals. I assisted in the drafting of numerous other appeals and a certiorari petition to the United States Supreme Court. Recently, I aided another attorney in drafting a successful Rule 29 motion for Judgment of Acquittal - meaning the client got to walk free after being incarcerated for six months.In the area of commercial foreclosure defense, I defended foreclosure actions on a dozen commercial properties for two clients. I also defended the related multi-million dollar civil suits.

While in law school, I worked as a clerk for Mr. Sanan by drafting various substantive motions and memorandum related to federal criminal defense matters. After moving to Oahu following graduation, Mr. Sanan graciously allowed me to continue drafting federal motions and appeals related to his criminal defense cases.As an associate for Mr. Sanan, I was allowed to argue a case before the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit related to the illegal re-entry into the United States by a previously deported individual. I was also able to deliver an open statement and cross examination in a multi-defendant, five-week long RICO and narcotics conspiracy trial, as well as assist in a two-week long federal jury trial alleging police misconduct.

Researched myriad topics from the status of summary suspension hearings before the circuit court rather than before another administrative body to sitting in on sentencing hearings, including the imposition of a death sentence prior to Illinois' moratorium.
