My role as a Fire Prevention Officer includes the validation and assessment of any new Fire Safety Certificates application that are applied for within the County of Donegal. This includes the assessment of all plans associated with the building and any relevant fire compliance reports. After completing the assessment of the application, recommendations relating as to how a client can best achieve the level of compliance required in accordance with the current fire safety regulations to gain a Fire safety Certificate are suggested. The Fire Safety Certificate demonstrates that the building is safely designed for the protection of life safety in the event of a fire.It is of vital importance that fire safety applications are assessed within two months of validation in accordance with current Building Regulations. Therefore, compiling and issuing of clients with Fire Safety Certificates involves working and adhering to strict time and organization deadlines in order to grant same. My role also includes the inspection of buildings such as Schools, Hospitals, Retail Centres and Night Clubs to ensure that fire safety legislation is being adhered to. These inspections include the review of all maintenance records associated with fire fighting equipment; emergency lighting and detection systems are up to date. The inspection also includes the review of fire risk assessments where applicable and ensuring that all staff have had fire safety training.Other responsibilities includes ensuring guidelines for best practices for Dangerous Substances licensing are met by assisting in checks and inspections of sites alongside a Senior Assistant Chief Fire Officer. Such sites would namely be Petrol Stations. In addition, my duties within the Donegal Fire Service involve the writing of reports and making recommendations in relation to fire safety which are generated from inspections of properties and assessments of fire safety applications.
