Boston architectural and social historian with many years teaching about the North American built environment with specialization in the 18th and 19th centuries. As a historic preservationist, while serving as longtime curator in Brookline, with the generous support of the Gardner and Doran families, we saved the historic Federal period Ingersoll-Gardner Carriage House at Green Hill by having it disassembled and rebuilt on the grounds of the Shirley-Eustis House in Roxbury (to house Gov. Eustis's coach and to serve as a function center). Additional preservation campaigns include: the Gaiety (later Publix) Theatre, the 1908 Clarence Blackall-designed theater and Boston's last remaining tangible connection to the Harlem Renaissance's Black vaudeville circuit (now site of Kensington Apartments), the 1908, Shreve Crump and Low, the Art Deco flagship store on Boylston Street (destroyed last year for new construction), the Altamura Carriage House at Fenway Court (ultimately demolished for the controversial Gardner Museum expansion), and the Hotel Alexandra, Boston's outstanding Peabody & Stearns-designed High Victorian Gothic apartment building.
