Core R&D - microbial biofilm research with applications for institutional cleaning and the food and beverage industry. Ongoing research regarding the microbial ecology of the built environment using classical and molecular methods.

Worked in the Natural Treatment Systems division of the Water Business Group on projects throughout the US. Mainly this dealt with projects related to constructed wetlands, bioremediation and stormwater treatment.

Supervised the development of the Orange County Water District (OCWD) Field Research Laboratory in Anaheim, California. Developed processes to analyze biogeochemical clogging in groundwater recharge basins. Developed constructed wetlands for the treatment of dairy wastewater and surface waters. Evaluated physical and chemical desilting technologies to enhance groundwater recharge. Developed a fish biomonitoring laboratory for the detection of emerging contaminants in groundwater. Analyzed the 465-acre Prado Wetlands for optimal nutrient removal. Performed hydraulic conductivity studies of native and mixed soils used in groundwater recharge. Developed a limnological database for the 1,500-acre groundwater recharge facility in Anaheim. Participated in bacterial TMDL studies in the Upper Santa Ana River Watershed.

Participated in a team effort between San Diego State University and San Diego Gas and Electric in the bioremediation of soil contaminated with single and polyaromatic hydrocarbons. This was the first in situ demonstration that showed the ability of anaerobic denitrifying bacteria to degrade aromatic compounds from leaking underground storage tanks. This project included field monitoring and laboratory analysis of the groundwater for inorganic and organic content using classical wet methods and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (GCMS).

Used constructed wetlands to investigate removal of heavy metals, nutrients, viruses, and bacteria from secondary and primary wastewater. Determined the influence of different aquatic plants on wastewater treatment. Isolated heavy metal-resistant bacteria from constructed wetlands. Experimented with the clay-alum coagulation (CCBA) process, an experimental physical-chemical wastewater treatment process. Designed and developed an algae wastewater treatment system.
