I have returned to study, undertaking a master's in educational leadership. I am working on a thesis of interest to me (leadership and assessment quality), which I also want to feed into journal publications in higher education leadership, pedagogy and entrepreneurship. It is worth mentioning that Blackburn has an extremely diverse student population with complex needs and my time there was challenging but also gave me invaluable insight into innovative approaches to supporting learners and widening participation. At British Gas (1990-1996) I rose from being the earliest appointed graduate engineering manager to Senior Manager, Western Europe (expatriate) in Global Ops in just over three years. I reported directly to the Global Gas Director and into the Board. I was responsible for major infrastructure projects, budgets and staff -from a small team of 25 with a budget of £250k in the UK, to 10m DM investment in East Germany (and advised on 300m DM over a fifteen year planning horizon). After leaving British Gas I worked as a business consultant for Government in addition to fulfilling private contracts and a teaching fellowship. In 1998 I completed a Masters in Technology Management (with Distinction) and then secured a promotion to Senior Teaching Fellow and European Project Manager at Liverpool John Moores' University. At the same time I was a Senior Visiting Fellow at Lancaster University, delivering to the MBA and judging on the MBA Venture Panel. In 2004 I became the MBA course leader at the University of Central Lancashire before completing my ESRC-sponsored PhD at Lancaster University in 2009; then moving on to five years at Staffordshire University as Associate Professor in Enterprise and then almost four years as Associate Dean at Wolverhampton University.

As Associate Dean I was part of SMT directing a significant Faculty comprising five Schools with an income of c.£40m and 6000 students. I was responsible for developing strategy, setting targets and motivating colleagues. In addition to Faculty SMT work I was the portfolio lead for the generation of c.£4.8 m income in commercial work, projects, CPD, international and trans-national education, and UK degree apprenticeships. I was responsible for business planning, strategic analysis and investment for the Faculty. At Lancaster: UG and PG Lecturing MSc Management, MSc Marketing and undergraduate BBA (Business administration, general management, organisational behaviour) in addition to the entrepreneurship and enterprise module for general undergraduate business courses. I lectured postgraduates on the MSc Management, MSc Marketing and undergraduates on the BBA (Business administration, general management, organisational behaviour). I also lectured on the entrepreneurship and enterprise module for general undergraduate business courses and I also facilitated group work for undergraduates on the new venture planning module. Additionally, I was part of the MBA business plan judging panel. Concurrently I began a PhD in Management. Lancaster University Management School is a leading institution in the UK and worldwide, being only one of three UK business schools to have always achieved 4*/5* research and top teaching ratings in every assessment exercise in the UK. My education there and involvement with the Institute for Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Development was and is invaluable. Lancaster is currently rated 6th/7th in the UK in various league tables and the Management School is also a top 10 in the UK and global top 100. Lancaster also validates the vast majority of awards at my present institution and I have an excellent working relationship with my alma mater.

I spent fifteen months contracted to Liverpool John Moores University and the Merseyside SME Development Centre. I was responsible for a European funded programme (ERDF) to assist small businesses, predominantly engineering, with product development and innovation. I also lectured on the management undergraduate module ‘enterprise and entrepreneurship’.

Growing and managing a portfolio of over 30 SME clients. This was a role that assisted SME owner-managers with strategic planning and implementation, focussing on business growth. Average increases in both turnover and net profit of 25% were achieved. I also taught small groups of managers in conjunction with the University of East London and I was an invited member of the local chamber of commerce and Black and Asian Business Society.
