The Department Head curriculum is the most demanding and in-depth professional course a Surface Warfare Officer will attend during their career. This intensive 27-week course prepares Officers for duty as department heads on all classes of Navy ships and is divided into two modules, Tactical Action Officer (TAO) and Operations, Readiness, Training & Engineering (ORT&E). TAO is comprised of Information Operations, Air and Missile Defense, Surface Warfare, Undersea Warfare, and Expeditionary Warfare. In addition to academic studies, students will participate in the Multi-Mission Team Trainer (MMTT), demonstrating their proficiency as a TAO. ORT&E module consists of Department Administration, Training Management, Afloat Safety, Leadership, Shiphandling, Anti-Terrorism, Material Readiness, Damage Control, Billet Specialty Training, and a Tactical Planning Exercise. Approximately 275 students attend the Department Head Course each year.
