About Stephen Rees

I've had a fascination with electronics and computers ever since my Dad first gave me my own 5 1/4" floppy to run programs on 'The Beast'. So, it was natural that I'd fall into work where these two fields intersect. I started out in hardware engineering and rapidly picked up software development - both as a way for people to interact with hardware, and as an equally challenging field with an endless variety of puzzles to solve. Perhaps I shouldn't point out that it was a much easier minor than math in college too....Over the last twenty years, these interests have given me several experiences engineering a variety of solutions - ranging from reducing the time to build BIOS spread-spectrum tables from hours to seconds for NVIDIA, to working on applications processing millions of dollars daily, to integrating research tools into a web portal using cloud services that can impact thousands of researchers around the world.The majority of my experience is PHP-based development, and I continue to expand my knowledge of how to best use that language and others as I pursue a Master's in Computer Science with evening classes. I love building beautiful things - whether that is code, a woodworking project, or a team of developers. Sometimes, though, you need variety. In order to stay (mostly) sane and healthy, some of my other activities include Krav Maga and playing strings. Violin (too screechy), viola (somewhat less irritating), and most recently double bass (low-key, like me).
