A highly successful history of senior leadership in the higher education industry, including as Head of Psychology at both Monash University and RMIT University. For 16 years he was a pro bono director of the Brain Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that funds 'blue sky' neuroscience research. With four decades of research experience, Stephen's expertise encompasses anatomy, biochemistry, physiology and psychology. As one of Australia's most influential and broad-based neuroscientists, his research spans Alzheimer's disease, obstructive sleep apnoea, inflammatory bowel disorders, signal detection, and whole-body vibration in motor vehicles. An experienced communicator, he was spokesperson for the Brain Foundation's Healthy Brain initiative and a recipient of the 2018 Media Star Award from RMIT. His papers have been cited more than 42,000 times (h-index = 60) and have been read more than 76,000 times. His Research Interest Score of 21,000 places him well within the top 1% of Neuroscientists worldwide.Stephen is one of those rare academics who has succeeded as an entrepreneur. In 2013 he founded NeuroTest Pty Ltd to market his intellectual property, the Subtle Cognitive Impairment Test (SCIT) (see https://www.neurotest.com), a sensitive online test of cognitive performance. A decade later, NeuroTest Pty Ltd continues to grow and is a tangible example of translational research, where basic research has made the difficult journey through the 'valley of death' and into the marketplace. Licenses to use the SCIT have been purchased by researchers and commercial companies in the healthcare sector in Australia, USA, China, UK, NZ and the Netherlands.Stephen is now 'semi-retired' and focusses on writing papers, public speaking and advisory roles.
