Senior Commissioning Manager
Technical Project Manager
Thames Gateway WTW is a desalination plant located in the south-east corner of Beckton Sewage Treatment Works. Since its construction in 2010, the plant has experienced reliability and performance issues which have restricted output consistency. SMB have been engaged to deliver capital maintenance and optimisation works across the process, to achieve a regulatory requirement of 100Ml/d output to waste. Due to the unknown condition of assets and historic performance issues, SMB took the approach to validate the original basis of design across key process areas and assess the condition of all site assets using BIM360 Field for physical assets and a purpose-built test rig for software veri-fication. The original scope list has thus been developed throughout the project, and managed via a change forum. Critical maintenance, inspections, cleaning and re-commissioning works have been carried out on the abstraction system, lamella flocculators, pressure filters, ultrafiltration system, reverse osmosis feed pumps, chemical tanks, neutralisation tank, MCC chiller system and MCC drives. The chemical dosing systems have been overhauled and been upgraded to achieve asset standard compliance where appropriate. The acid and polymer dose to the lamella flocculators has been optimised through jar testing trials, and aluminium monitoring has been added to the lamella outlet to minimise fouling of the downstream UF membranes. Secondary isolation valves have been installed on the pressure filter in-let/outlet and ultrafiltration systems to improve resilience and enable future maintenance to be carried out without plant shutdown. The ultrafilter backwash system has been optimised through control system upgrades, while level control has been added to the pressure filter backwash sys-tem to prevent media carryover. A complete refurbishment is being undertaken for the Rehardening (Lime) System, including the addition of a ‘Rotoflo’ powder discharge system, metered screw conveyors.
